Most of the time people focus on ways to turn back the clock on their skin’s appearance through expensive anti-aging products, but the best way to avoid aging your skin is prevention. By avoiding these eight bad habits, you’ll help your skin stay younger longer. It is never too late to start any of these habits, so start breaking these bad habits today even if you’ve been an offender for years!

1. Sunning

It is so ironic that the warmth and comfort of the suns rays that bring so much life to the earth are actually so harmful to our skin. Staying in the sun for extended periods of time may give you a nice healthy glow now, but down the road it leads to aging your skin. Avoid going out during the peak of day, seek shade, use sun screen and cover up!

Whether applying makeup, putting in contacts or lifting your wrinkles up, tugging at the skin under the eyes damages the sensitive skin in that area. Whenever possible, avoid touching or tugging at the delicate skin underneath the eye. When you must apply moisturizer and makeup onto that area, use your middle finger since it is the weakest finger.

3. Picking at the Skin

This is a gross habit on top of being bad for your skin, but it is a crime many of us commit. Picking at blemishes only makes them worse, so it is imperative to just let them heel naturally. Small scars left from blemishes we picked at definitely makes our faces look older, so just keep your hands off the face!

4. Too Much Makeup, Too Often

Wearing makeup all of the time is a big problem when it comes to aging your skin, because the heavy makeup and chemicals weighs down the skin and clogs the pores. Do your skin a favor, skip the makeup whenever possible. Honestly, no one cares if you are or are not wearing makeup when you go out to the supermarket, gym, movies, etc. anyways, so just allow yourself to look natural!

5. Sugary Alcoholic Drinks

All alcohol poses a major threat when it comes to aging your skin, but sugary drinks are a major offender. The excessive carbs and surgar cause our skin to inflame which damages cells, and this can easily lead to aging your skin. No alcohol is good for the skin, but if you must partake stick to non-sugar options like shots. Just make sure not to over-do it!

Getting your beauty sleep is not just a cliche impression. It turns out every night we skip a full 8 hours is aging our skin. Make sure that you get plenty of sleep. Heck, even try to schedule naps whenever you can to help keep your skin looking young and healthy.

7. Washing too Often

Washing our skin too often strips it of our natural oils. It can be tempting to wash our skin constantly, especially when the weather is hot, but try to avoid only washing to remove makeup, first thing in the morning and the last time before bed. Also, try to shower only one time a day to avoid stripping the skin of its natural oils.

Wearing sun screen isn’t only to help prevent skin cancer, but it is also to help minimize the damage the sun does to the skin. By not wearing sun screen you are aging your skin every time you step outside when the sun is out. Incorporate sun screen into your daily moisturizing routine for the face. Also, if you know you are going to be out a long time during the day apply sunscreen on all exposed skin, and reapply if you get sweaty or wet.
